Executive Function Needs: A Checklist for Teachers
A Practical Resource for Parents and School Teams
Executive function skills (planning, organizing, starting tasks, holding information in mind, shifting between ideas, managing time, and regulating emotion) are still developing well into a person’s twenties. A child who struggles with these skills isn’t lacking motivation; the neural systems that support them are still under construction.
How to Use This Checklist
Review the checklist with your child’s teacher and check only the areas that apply. Not every child needs every strategy. The goal is to identify the specific skills that are getting in the way and consider accommodations or supports that reduce the load of the task without reducing what your child is expected to learn.
