Elementary Academic and Writing Strategies for Young Learners

Strong academic foundations built during elementary school set the stage for a lifetime of learning. At Evoke Learning, we help young students develop the writing skills, executive function, self-advocacy, and study habits that drive lasting academic success, both in and out of the classroom.

Our customized programs are specifically designed to support neurodivergent learners, including students with ADHD, dyslexia, ASD, giftedness, and executive dysfunction. We do this by honouring their unique strengths and building practical strategies for growth.

What Is the Elementary Academic and Writing Strategies Program?

Elementary Academic and Writing Strategies is a one-to-one virtual coaching program that targets four core skill areas: academic writing, executive function, self-advocacy, and effective learning habits. Each element is tailored to the individual student’s needs, learning profile, and goals.

Key Areas of Focus

  • 01 Building Academic Writing Skills Writing is foundational to learning in every subject. Our program teaches students to communicate clearly and confidently across multiple genres and assignment types. Students develop skills to:
  • Understand different types of writing, including narrative, descriptive, expository (compare/contrast), and opinion or argumentative writing
  • Produce grade-appropriate assignments such as short stories, opinion pieces, persuasive letters, short essays, reports, and book reviews
  • Plan, draft, revise, and edit their written work with improved clarity, organization, grammar, and punctuation
  • Generate ideas and get them on paper with confidence
  • Use assistive technology tools such as speech-to-text, word prediction software, and annotation tools to support and reduce barriers to writing
  • 02 Strengthening Executive Function Skills Executive function skills—the mental processes that help us plan, focus, manage time, and control impulses—are the foundation for learning and behaviour. Our program helps students strengthen:
  • Organization and time management: keeping track of homework, supplies, and daily routines
  • Task initiation and completion: starting work independently and following through to the end
  • Flexible thinking and problem-solving: adapting to change and trying new approaches
  • Attention and focus: managing distractions and building sustained concentration
  • 03 Building Self-Advocacy Skills Self-advocacy empowers students to understand their own needs and communicate them effectively—skills that are especially critical for neurodivergent learners. Through our program, students learn to:
  • Ask for help: knowing how to seek support from teachers and trusted adults
  • Take responsibility: managing belongings, submitting work on time, and meeting expectations
  • Recognize their strengths and challenges, developing a growth mindset to build confidence and resilience
  • 04 Developing Effective Learning Habits Good study and learning habits help young students become active, efficient, and self-directed learners. We focus on:
  • Evidence-based learning strategies: summarizing, using visuals and diagrams, mnemonic devices, retrieval practice, and spaced repetition
  • Planning and memory support: using checklists, calendars, and visual reminders to stay organized
  • Building curiosity: encouraging students to ask questions, explore new ideas, and see mistakes as learning opportunities

What Do Students Gain from Academic Strategy Sessions?
