Our math tutoring and remediation programs aim to slowly build each student’s confidence and change their mindset about math.

Math Diagnostic: Creating a Personalized Plan of Action

At Evoke Learning, our focus is on identifying and closing the gaps in our clients’ learning. The first step in this process is the completion of an informal, low-stress diagnostic assessment. This assessment allows us to pinpoint the specific concepts and curriculum expectations with which the student is struggling. This information also helps to guide our tutors so that they may effectively and efficiently bring the student up to grade level.

During this informal meeting, the student works with our diagnostic specialist and works through a series of curriculum based questions to determine gaps in their learning. Once the assessment is completed, a report will be generated to outline the student’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as identifying the areas of curriculum that will be targeted for reinforcement during tutoring sessions. This report will also be shared with the tutor so that they may plan a customized program for the student.

Developing and Enhancing Number Sense: Grades 1–4

Cognitive science experts have found that the development of number sense plays as critical a role in mathematics learning as phonemic awareness does in reading development. Number sense is a person’s ability to use and understand numbers. Students with number sense understand the relative values of numbers; use them to make judgments; understand their use in flexible ways when adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing them; and can develop useful strategies when counting, measuring, or estimating. This program is suitable for students in Grades 1–4 who are struggling with the academic content of math and require remediation and who would also benefit from some enrichment to help them develop stronger number sense.  The program begins with a math diagnostic, which allows the tutor to pinpoint the specific concepts and curriculum expectations with which the student is struggling. This information also helps to guide our tutors so that they may effectively and efficiently bring the student up to grade level.

Math Remediation: Grades 5–7

This program is suitable for students in Grades 5–7 who are struggling with the academic content of math and require remediation. The program begins with a math diagnostic that allows the tutor to pinpoint the specific concepts and curriculum expectations with which the student is struggling. This information also helps to guide our tutors so that they may effectively and efficiently bring the student up to grade level.  The tutor will revisit earlier grade level instruction to remediate learning gaps in the student’s lower level math and support them in their current grade level to deepen understanding.

Math Tune-Up and Tutoring

Remediation for this program includes reviewing the student’s last completed grade level, identifying gaps in learning, and ensuring that the student has a solid understanding of the material. Math is like a hierarchy, and having a solid understanding of previous grade concepts will assist the student in navigating the current curriculum. The tutor will focus on re-teaching skills and concepts that the student may have missed, in addition to supporting them in their current grade level. Students are assisted with the completion of math assignments, and prepared for upcoming tests and exams, with the assistance of their tutor.
